This workshop introduces collage as both a formal and conceptual art making practice. Collage, as an art medium operates between control and chance. It is centered around existing images that carry prior meaning and get reappropriated into new compositions. Collage is an adaptable practice that merges past and present, intention and chance. Participants in the workshop will create multiple small-scale collage works that explore both narrative and non-narrative composition. Emphasis is placed on form and composition, layering, texture, and the investigation of 2-dimensional space through the recombination of found imagery. Collage will be framed as a process of recontextualization—where fragments of existing images are reassembled to generate new meanings and visual relationships. Emphasis will be placed on experimentation and exploration while developing an understanding of spatial relationships, allowing intuition and coincidence to guide decisions. Part of our Artist Factory exhibition, inspired by Radical Joy and the dialogue between Teaching Artists and student voices. Come experiment and see what emerges. Artist Bio: Andrew Rice has always called the Rocky Mountain West region his home. Born in Aspen, CO, he received his BFA in printmaking from the University of Colorado in Boulder and his MFA in Salt Lake City, UT at the University of Utah. Rice is currently Lecturer, Printmaking and Printmaking Studio Manager at Weber State University in Ogden, UT. Rice also runs the pop-up gallery, erosion_SLC out of his private studio, showcasing small solo exhibitions of 3 pieces by each artist.
